Kicking Off The Summer Season!
The day started at 7:00 AM as sound and music equipment was loaded onto the Siuslaw Bank Amphitheater stage at Greenwaters Park. With overcast skies, each of us trying hard to mentally part the clouds and let the sun shine through, we set about preparing for the first concert in the Oakridge Concerts In The Park summer series. Volunteers and food and craft vendors worked together to transform the park into a destination for people to enjoy a day of food, fun, and a free concert starring Danny Dunham, Scott Huckabay, and The Edge.
People began to arrive to claim a spot on the grass at around 10:30 for the 1:00 show. As they set up their folding chairs, canopies, and blankets, the gray clouds turned to blue skies and sunshine for the remainder of the day.
At 1:00 Oakridge's own Danny Dunham (accompanied by Seth Risseeuw from Pleasant Hill) took to the stage and the first concert was underway. People gathered in the beer garden and all around the stage to listen to this talented singer/songwriter play his original country style songs about love, hangovers, and fallen friends in Afghanistan. I can't think of a better performer to have kicked off the season than Danny, and judging from the applause and cheering following each song, the audience agreed.
As the crowd continued to grow to well over 300 (a record for a first concert of the season) Scott Huckabay took the stage. This was Scott's second time performing for Oakridge Concerts In The Park. There was no doubt that Scott would be returning after his show stopping performance last year. Known as The Guitar Alchemist, Scott was hailed BAM magazine's 'Guitarist of the Year' while performing at the Roxy Theatre in West Hollywood. He's performed with such groups as Crosby, Stills & Nash and his album Alchemy won the 2000 Independent Visionary Award for best new age artist. He has performed all over the world including several ancient sites in Egypt which led to a very special concert inside the Great Pyramid of Giza. This years performance was even more amazing than last years and we are in hopes that Scott will continue to come back to share his unique and original musical style.
During the break between performers there was a raffle for dinner from Sizzlers at the Gateway Mall, and a Gift card from the Shell station here in Oakridge (both sponsors for the concert series) along with an auction for a beautifully jeweled egg donated by Shannon's Beads and Art. The funds from the raffle and auction, along with the beer garden, tee-shirts, and souvenir button sales go towards keeping the music alive in Oakridge. Oakridge Concerts In The Park each year donates a portion of their proceeds to a special cause, this year's is the Fight 4 Luke foundation. Luke Hubbard of Oakridge is battling a rare and serious blood disease called aplastic anemia. Donation jars were placed in our beer garden and in all our vendor booths to help out the family. Thanks to everybody who gave so generously.
To close out the concert was a group that has graced the Amphitheater stage many times...The Edge. These guys know how to rock and roll and they're not afraid to show it. Band members include Dylan Little of Prineville, Wyatt Steele and his son Bob Steele (also from Prineville) and Kirk Troute of Oakridge (who's company Sharp Sound Productions provides all the lighting and sound for each concert). Finishing the day with a three hour set that got everybody from seniors to toddlers up on their feet and dancing, The Edge delivered their signature style of classic rock hits along with some hard driving originals that was the perfect capper to a great day of music.
The next event in the Oakridge Concerts In The Park will be July 12th. It's the Blues, Brews, and Cruise concert and classic car show. The day will start at 12:30 with an uptown parade of beautifully restored classic cars and motorcycles. Bring the family uptown to enjoy the parade and pick your favorite classic look. After the parade people are invited down here to Greenwaters Park for the chance to see each of these classic beauties up close while enjoying blues legends Vicki Stevens and Heavy Chevy.
